Framework alignment notes
i
The details of a metric’s alignment to each framework, including where the same or similar metric can be found within the listed framework.
Mandatory (core global) TNFD C1.1. (ecosystem use change). Extent of land/freshwater/ocean ecosystem conserved or restored (km2), split into voluntary and required by statutes/regulations.
In reporting this core global disclosure metric, an organisation should distinguish between conservation and restoration of area: (1) Owned, leased or managed; and (2) Beyond value chain mitigation.
An organisation should additionally report changes that do not meet the definition of conserved or restored, such as area of land that has been decontaminated. An organisation should report area conserved and restored separately, if data is available.
For EN/HB/RE/RS:The extent conserved or restored under the core global disclosure metric should include only activity within the value chain. Area of soil restored to a minimum depth of 30.48 cm following disturbance by construction activities (m2).
For CM: The extent conserved or restored reported under the core global disclosure metric should include only activity within the value chain.
Voluntary (may) DR E4-5 ref AR 34c - Size and location of all habitat areas protected or restored, whether directly or indirectly controlled by the undertaking, and whether the success of the restoration measure was or is approved by independent external professionals.
Mandatory GRI 101-2-b - The size [hectares] of the area under restoration or rehabilitation and/or of the area restored or rehabilitated
Target example
[Company name] will increase the proportion of [land/freshwater/ocean] ecosystems [conserved/restored] in [target location(s)] by [target amount, in absolute km2, or percentage] by [target date] compared to a [baseline year] baseline.

Metric Contribution to Action:
Measuring conserved or restored ecosystems tracks progress toward ecological recovery and ensures compliance with regulatory and voluntary commitments.
Observations/Sucesses/Challenges:
> This metric is both a state and response type of metric.
> The distinction between voluntary and regulatory-driven conservation/restoration provides transparency in corporate responsibility.
> Clarity needed on what qualifies as "conserved" versus "restored"?
> Potential overlaps in reporting where a single area might be counted in both voluntary and regulatory categories, leading to double counting.
> No indication of whether the conservation/restoration is long-term, permanent, or subject to change.
