A new sustainability ambition: Regenesis

APP Group has launched a bold new sustainability ambition Regenesis, marking a decisive step forward in the company’s commitment to climate action, responsible forestry, and community empowerment. At the heart of this ambition is APP’s first major initiative: the Forest Positive Policy (FPP).

Unveiled in Jakarta, the launch represents not only an evolution of APP Group’s 2013 Forest Conservation Policy (FCP) but a sharpened and future-focused approach to forest stewardship. The Forest Positive Policy sets out a path that moves beyond “do no harm” to actively delivering positive outcomes for forests, biodiversity, and people together with governments, communities, civil society and technical partners. APP is committing USD 30 million annually over the next decade to support its commitment to conserve and restore 1 million hectares of landscapes across Indonesia.

Building on progress, looking to 2050

Over the past decade, APP Group has made significant advances on its Sustainability Roadmap Vision 2030.

  • 89% of natural forests in APP’s 600,000 hectares of conservation areas are maintained in good condition.
  • 99% of critical peat dome areas within the supply chain have been restored.
  • Restoration programmes have shown increases in critical species across concessions.
  • Renewable fuel use has grown steadily, with 58% of production operations powered by renewables, supported by Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) approval.
  • Through its flagship DMPA livelihoods programme, APP now supports 459 villages, benefitting over 88,000 people.

Regenesis and the Forest Positive Policy builds on this foundation, setting out a vision to 2050 with measurable goals, transparency, and accountability at their core.

A framework for positive impact

The Forest Positive Policy is structured around three core pillars: Forests, People and Value Chain.

Forests: APP is committing to conserve and restore 1 million hectares of landscapes across Indonesia, including Bukit Tigapuluh, Riau Wetland Heritage, Giam Siak Kecil, South Sumatra and Kalimantan.

People: Indigenous peoples and local communities remain central to APP’s sustainability vision. The Forest Positive Policy commits to strengthening livelihoods and prosperity in forest-dependent villages, respecting Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) and upholding human rights in line with UN Guiding Principles as well as providing access to grievance mechanisms and improving due diligence.

Value Chain: The policy extends to APP’s global fibre supply chain, through strengthened supplier requirements, enhanced evaluation tools (SERA Plus), and capacity-building initiatives. New suppliers must demonstrate deforestation-free operations after 2020, ensuring accountability across every link of the chain.

To support these efforts across all three pillars, APP is committing USD 30 million annually over the next decade. This funding will enable the protection of critical ecosystems, support endangered species, promote biodiversity, empower communities, and strengthen sustainable supply chains. All initiatives will be co-designed with strategic partners to ensure positive ecological and social outcomes.

Transparency, partnerships, and accountability

APP will establish a dedicated Independent Unit to deliver its conservation and restoration commitments, supported by an Independent Advisory Panel of experts. Over the next 24 months, the company will define sub-goals, clear metrics, and performance indicators to ensure progress toward its 2050 vision.

This collaborative approach is designed to align with frameworks such as the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), the Accountability Framework Initiative (AFI), and the FSC Remedy Framework, while scaling impact through public–private–community partnerships.

A call to action

The launch of Regenesis and the Forest Positive Policy underscores APP’s role as a sustainability leader in Indonesia and beyond. By combining conservation and restoration, community empowerment, and responsible value chain management, APP aims to set a new global standard for corporate forest stewardship.

As APP Group’s Chairman of the Sustainability Committee, Bernard Tan, emphasised at the launch of Regenesis: “It’s not enough to do no harm. It is time to do good.”

This milestone strives to be both a call to action and an invitation to partners across government, business, and civil society to collaborate on building a future where forests, people, and business thrive together.
