How do I get started?

To make the most of the Nature Action Portal, follow the steps below. Begin by exploring your sector’s key dependencies and impacts (STEP 1), then plan the actions you wish to drive in your operations or supply chain (STEP 2). The Portal will then recommend tailored nature-related metrics to help you track and report progress (STEP 3).

Step 1: Explore dependencies & impacts

Gain a clear understanding of how your sector interacts with nature by exploring the most material dependencies, impacts, risks, and opportunities across your operations and supply chain. This foundational step highlights where your business relies on and affects nature, helping identify critical areas for action, manage risks, and uncover opportunities to future-proof your company in a rapidly changing environment.

Step 2: Plan actions

Identify and select the actions that will have the greatest impact in halting and reversing nature loss within your company’s operations and supply chain. The Portal guides you to actions tailored to your sector’s most material dependencies, impacts, risks, and opportunities – helping you manage risks, uncover nature-related opportunities, respond to evolving stakeholder and regulatory expectations and drive nature-positive action.

Step 3: Choose metrics

Navigate and select the most relevant and feasible metrics to measure and disclose progress on your chosen actions. The Portal connects each action to prioritized metrics, enabling you to align with relevant voluntary and regulatory frameworks, drive action across your operations and supply chain, and support in robust target-setting.

Sustainably managed forests are core business assets, securing raw-material supply, storing carbon, and providing biodiversity habitat and water. The Nature Action Portal helps the forest sector to further implement sustainable forest management and align on relevant metrics across operations and value chain. It also assists us to make better investment decisions and report consistently to customers and financiers

Yuuko Iizuka, Executive Officer, Sustainability Department, Sumitomo Forestry

The Portal creates a well thought-through overview of nature related indicators and metrics across supply chains. Aligned metrics and definitions will help harmonize reporting and enable efficient monitoring - all the way to the forests and agricultural landscapes helping companies understand dependencies, impacts, risks, and opportunities - both for their business and for nature.

To achieve the needed transformation, every business must recognize the complex interdependence between its activities and nature. Holcim is proud to have contributed to the collaborative process behind the Nature Action Portal which has delivered clarity and consistency across the built environment system – building alignment on priority actions, metrics and accelerating the shift to a more resilient, nature-positive future.

Antonio Carrillo, Vice President Sustainability, Holcim

The resilience of our agri-food system is highly dependent on nature and the services it provides. A unified approach to measuring the benefits of these services across farmers, suppliers, consumers, and financial partners is essential to measure and track progress of landscape-based actions and initiatives. The Portal and the underlying work to align metrics is an important first step in harmonizing corporate impact monitoring and reporting. It builds trust and a common language, which can unlock finance and de-risk investments – accelerating credible nature-positive action and accountability.

Natasha Santos, VP Sustainability, Bayer

As a financial service provider in the food and agri sector, we aim to understand the key dependencies, risks, impacts, and opportunities related to nature in the sectors where we operate. Our objective is to help customers transition to more sustainable practices and strengthen their resilience. By linking sector initiatives to practical metrics and disclosures, the Portal lays the foundation for a system where nature-related data is applied consistently by all actors, supporting purposes from prioritization to performance monitoring.

Aafke Keizer, Chief Sustainability Officer, Rabobank

The Nature Action Portal aims to bring clarity to a complex landscape of metrics and highlight the most impactful actions to halt and reverse nature loss across sectors and value chains. It should empower the forest sector to strengthen resilience and accelerate progress towards nature positive outcomes. Mondi continues to prioritise a practical, science-based approach aligned with the goals of the Global Biodiversity Framework.

The Portal only includes existing metrics from key voluntary and regulatory frameworks, some of which apply to all sectors and others that are sector-specific. Refer to the Frameworks page for a list of all the frameworks considered for each sector. To ensure alignment with the existing nature-related disclosure landscape, we did not develop new metrics for the Portal. We have included two frameworks developed by WBCSD in the analysis where relevant: the Global Circularity Protocol and the Regenerative Agriculture Metrics.
