The consumption of nutrient-rich plant-based foods needs to increase and to diversify for both health and environmental benefits. Focusing on comprehensive food system interventions to promote the production, distribution and consumption of plant-based foods would have a significant effect on supporting healthy people and a healthy planet.
Diets low in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, pulses and seeds are responsible for more deaths than any other risk globally, including tobacco smoking. Raising people’s awareness requires identifying current trends and attitudes to food and aligning business models accordingly to meet increasing demand for affordable, healthy and convenient products.
Business should invest in innovative plant-based products with positive sustainability profiles and, with the support of communication and marketing tools, they should set concrete actions to increase availability, accessibility, and affordability of diverse, convenient nutrient rich plant-based foods, with an ultimate goal of driving consumer behavior change
We aim to develop with our member companies a series of science-based solutions to optimize plant production and consumption for nutritionally healthy and environmentally sustainable diets. We support companies as they address the underconsumption of plant-based foods, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and wholegrains. These plants should make up about half of all diets but are currently consumed at much lower levels than those prescribed in the EAT-Lancet reference diet.
