Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Where do the metrics come from?
The Portal only includes existing metrics from key voluntary and regulatory frameworks, some of which apply to all sectors and others that are sector-specific. Refer to the Frameworks page for a list of all the frameworks considered for each sector.
To ensure alignment with the existing nature-related disclosure landscape, we did not develop new metrics for the Portal. We have included two frameworks developed by WBCSD in the analysis where relevant: the Global Circularity Protocol and the Regenerative Agriculture Metrics.
Can I go directly to the metrics without reading through all the pages before?
Yes, you can access the metrics tool directly. You can do this in two ways. From the homepage, if you click “Start here” and select your sector, you will have the option to choose:
- “Skip to metrics tool” which will take you directly to the metrics page;
- Click the button in the FAQ section on the homepage, select your sector, and you will be redirected to the tool.
How do I submit feedback?
There is a Feedback button on the Portal’s homepage that will bring you to the feedback form. There is also a Feedback button at the top of the detailed metric pages.
We appreciate any feedback you can provide about your experience using the Portal, on the accuracy of its content, the areas of future development, etc.
Where can I find more details on the methodology linked to the actions, metrics and target setting?
Please see the Methodology page for an overview of the approach, key concepts and guidance used to develop the Portal’s content, including actions, metrics and example targets.
Who is the Portal built for?
The Portal’s content is designed primarily for sustainability practitioners in companies operating or sourcing from the following sectors or systems: agri-food, forest products, energy, the built environment and pharmaceuticals. Content for the chemical sector will be available in 2026.
Practitioners working in sustainability, reporting or procurement functions are expected to benefit the most from the Portal’s content and functionalities. We will continue to monitor how the Portal can best serve existing and additional user groups.
Do users have to pay to access the Portal?
The Portal is freely available on the WBCSD website and does not require a login.
Do users need to share any data in the Portal?
The Portal is not intended to be a data repository. It guides users in choosing the most impactful actions to halt and reverse nature loss and explore their connections to material dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities (DIROs).
Based on the user’s selection, the Portal will propose a tailored set of relevant and feasible metrics to measure and report progress in line with key voluntary and regulatory frameworks. The Portal also provides illustrative target examples for the prioritized metrics.
Who was involved in the development of the Portal’s content?
100+ companies and 40+ stakeholders (including NGOs, standard-setters, frameworks, business associations and coalitions) have been involved in the development of the Portal’s content since 2023 – when work began on WBCSD’s Roadmaps to Nature Positive.
We developed the content with the support of the following technical partners: Arcadis, Environmental Resources Management (ERM), EY, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Quantis-BCG, and The Biodiversity Consultancy. Refer to the Acknowledgements page for more details.
What is the difference between ‘sector’ and ‘topic’ in the Portal? And will the Portal include more sectors and topics in the future?
In the Portal, a sector or system refers to a group of related industries or economic activities based on shared sustainability-related risks and opportunities.
The sectors/systems that currently feature in the Portal are: the agri-food system, the built environment system, the energy system, the forest products sector, and the pharmaceutical sector. This will expand to include the chemical sector in the future.
A topic refers to a theme that cuts across different sectors. Water is the first topic available in the Portal. We hope to expand to other topics in the future, such as “circularity”.
Why does the Portal only show Agri-food and Forest sectors in my supply chain view, even though my supply chain intersects with other sectors?
Although your supply chain may intersect with other sectors, only bio-based materials from agriculture and forestry are currently available in the Portal. We hope to include other raw material inputs in the future, starting with chemical products.
Does the Portal point to data sources for each metrics?
Currently, the Portal does not link to data sources. Instead, it provides an assessment of the relevance and feasibility of each metric based on data availability and accessibility, among other considerations.
Is the alignment with frameworks guaranteed to be up to date?
The content of the Portal reflects the status of frameworks, standards and guidance at the time we conducted the assessments– in 2024 and 2025.
We will continue to update the content to ensure it remains relevant; however, temporary discrepancies may occur due to the dynamic and rapidly evolving nature disclosure landscape.
When applying the metrics prioritized in the Portal, you should exercise due diligence to ensure alignment with the latest and most relevant requirements. If you notice a discrepancy, please submit feedback using the button on the Portal homepage or on the detailed page for each metric.
