About the Nature Action Portal

Context

Despite growing awareness, corporate action on nature continues to fall far short of the urgency required. This is partly because companies still lack experience in managing the inherent complexities of nature. They also lack experience in navigating the rapidly evolving corporate accountability frameworks that promote the use of thousands of metrics.

As nature-related accounting and target-setting frameworks continue to evolve to address this complexity, businesses need to take immediate action to halt and reverse the loss of natural resources that are vital to their sustainability and the broader economy.

Our solution

In response to these challenges, we developed the Nature Action Portal to accelerate corporate action on nature across sectors, supply chains and topics.

Created in collaboration with more than 100 leading companies, this resource helps sustainability practitioners identify the most relevant metrics to measure and report on their actions to halt and reverse nature loss, in alignment with major voluntary and regulatory frameworks.

With a few clicks, users can plan high-impact actions to tackle the key dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities (DIROs) for their sector. Each action links to a tailored and prioritized set of nature-related metrics and example targets, offering visibility into how priority metrics align with leading voluntary and regulatory frameworks.

The Portal helps users navigate the complex metrics landscape without adding new metrics.

The ambition

Through this initiative, we aim to build a strong corporate performance and accountability system for nature – one that embeds nature into core business decisions and drives meaningful corporate contributions to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Achieving the goals set out in the framework requires more than individual company actions, it calls for a system-wide transformation that tackles the root causes of nature loss. This system-level change is at the heart of WBCSD’s Roadmaps to Nature Positive, which bring together peers from the same sectors and supply chains to build a shared agenda that accelerates nature-positive ambition, action and accountability.

A successful transition to a nature-positive economy depends on the clear and consistent use of nature-related metrics to measure and disclose actions to halt and reverse nature loss. It enables companies to set ambitious goals, track progress and communicate transparently – while providing key relevant data to guide decisions and direct resources toward actions that deliver the greatest benefits for nature.

Using the Portal

The Nature Action Portal focuses on corporate sustainability practitioners operating in – or sourcing from – the following sectors or systems: forest, agri-food, built environment, energy, pharmaceutical and chemical (to come).

For each sector or system, the user will find an assessment of material dependencies, impacts, risk and opportunities (DIROs), suggested actions to effectively address these in direct operations and the supply chain, as well as metrics to measure and report progress.

Companies should complement its content with company-level assessments based on established guidance, such as from the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) and others.
