Introduction

Electrification of transport and decarbonization of the automotive industry, powered by renewable electricity, is at the center of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction efforts.
To accelerate this transition in line with the Paris Agreement, the Mobility Decarbonization project convenes CEOs at the nexus of energy, mobility and built environment. Together, we aim to bridge the gap to a net-zero scenario for road transport by supporting and increasing the deployment of charging infrastructure and Zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) technologies.
The challenge

Transport accounts for 24% of global energy-related emissions and more than 80% of people living in cities are exposed to air pollution levels that exceed the World Health Organization limits.
Mass adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) is a key lever to reach the goals of the Paris Agreement, but the lack of accessible charging infrastructure slow down the global deployment. Achieving a timely, equitable and clean transition requires accelerating technology adoption while efficiently managing energy and built-environment integration. The challenge becomes multidimensional with the diversity of technology maturity and regulations across geographies and the multitude of market and demand segments to address.
The business case

Cross value chain collaboration is central to bringing clarity in technology deployment roadmaps and improving the investment case for technology deployment to bridge the gap to net-zero GHG emission trajectories.
EV fleets can catalyze the EV market growth and provide much-needed energy distribution system flexibility, while integrated planning improves efficiency across buildings and mobility. Moving from a siloed approach to more integrated planning and operations can improve the business case for accelerated deployment of charging and ZEV technology and help attract capital for accelerated transport decarbonization.
The solution

WBCSD’s Mobility Decarbonization project convenes business leaders across the transport, energy and built environment systems to accelerate the deployment of ZEV and charging infrastructure deployment.
We do this by building global multistakeholder coalitions, strengthening public-private dialogues and evaluating the social and environmental benefit of technology deployment. The project channels ambition and action through regional business platforms to accelerate and highlight the viability of large-scale fleet-led EV adoption across geographies.
