Budapest, 26 February 2020: BCSD Hungary (BCSDH) hosted a dialogue on Vision 2050 as part of its Annual General Meeting, diving into roles and opportunities for business to help unlock the transformations that are needed to allow over 9 billion people to live well, within planetary boundaries by mid-century.

The session provided companies operating in Hungary with an opportunity to hear an update on WBCSD’s ambition to refresh its Vision. The update, provided by WBCSD representative Filippo Veglio, was followed by an exchange of insights among the 80 participants from business, government and civil society about the challenges and opportunities to catalyze the transformation of major economic systems (food, energy, mobility, etc.) in Hungary in line with sustainability imperatives. Furthermore, participants shared their views on the impact of global trends across demographics, economics, politics and finance on Hungary’s operating environment for the years ahead.

The session – attended by about 100 business leaders and representatives – aimed to ensure that the Vision 2050 Refresh work incorporates the varying impacts and importance of sustainability challenges in Hungary, to create ownership of the Vision 2050 process to ensure the initiatives can be practically implemented in Hungary, and to build a network of collaborators in Hungary to drive change.

BCSD Hungary has run a successful Action 2020 Hungary program which is now coming to an end. But as Attila Chikán Jr., Chair of BCSDH put it, “it is now important to identify key “must-solve” challenges that business will have to tackle in the coming years. This refresh of Vision 2050 offers the opportunity to analyze social, economic, and political shifts and to incorporate new critical elements that have emerged. Through this process, we can create a renewed, collective, positive business action and leadership agenda for the decade to come. The future is determined by what we do now, and the window of opportunity is closing fast. BCSDH will continue to position itself at the center of collective business action for a sustainable world.

WBCSD is engaging Global Network partners across the world in a roadshow around Vision 2050, aiming to incorporate the varying impacts and importance of sustainability challenges across countries and to rally companies of all sizes around a positive, opportunity-based, action agenda it needs for the decade to come, in support of the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and beyond.
