The future of business is circular, to enable 9+ billion people to safely live within the boundaries of the planet.
As part of the WBCSD Circular Economy program, this new Plastics & Packaging project is a global cross value chain business coalition helping companies to accelerate solutions to make plastics and packaging circular and sustainable.
We gather our efforts around five workstreams with specific deliverables: Mapping & converging initiatives; Circular sustainability assessment for packaging; Corporate plastic footprinting & disclosure; Transition roadmap for B2B chemical products; plus a supporting workstream on policy & financing.
The global demand for plastic will continue to grow, likely to double in the next 20 years. However, only 15% of the total plastic produced is recycled today and it is estimated that 11 million metric tons of plastic leak into the ocean (The Pew Charitable Trusts and SYSTEMIQ, Breaking the Plastic Wave).
Packaging is the largest application of plastics globally creating a growing societal pressure for companies to adopt circular models with no waste.
Businesses, in their effort to respond to the challenges, need a safe space along the plastics value chain and across various sectors to jointly develop business-led solutions that encompass both circularity and sustainability.
We are building a global cross value chain business coalition embracing the circular economy through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse, to accelerate solutions to make plastics circular and sustainable, aiming at ending the flow of plastic waste into the natural environment.
