Bangkok, Thailand, 27 October, 2020 – South Pole’s SHIFT Asia platform was today awarded the coveted title of ‘2020 State-of-the-Art Partnership for SDG7’ (clean energy) by the prestigious P4G community. The P4G awards honor some of the world’s most innovative collaborations for sustainable development across key areas of food and agriculture, water, energy, cities, and circular economy.

“Insight, finance, and technology alone are not enough to deliver the change we need to see in the world: we need robust partnerships, especially between the public and private sectors - to drive transformational change. And we need to build these today to deliver the solutions needed for a greener and cleaner tomorrow,” says Ingo Puhl, co-founder and Managing Director Thailand at South Pole.

SHIFT Asia is South Pole’s first large-scale platform to use carbon finance for transformational change. It brings together private and public stakeholders to advance green mobility and clean energy infrastructure through the concept of convergence.

The use of carbon finance will finance key assets – such as shared electric vehicle (EV) batteries and battery charging infrastructure – that drive the convergence of e-mobility, energy storage, and renewable energy generation. A first example of this is the convergence project pioneered by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), the world's largest energy service company, and SWAG EV, an emerging e-mobility player, in Thailand, to drive the use of electric motorbikes while contributing to increasing power grid flexibility.

SHIFT Asia is also the second ever Article 6-linked, bilateral transaction globally.

“SHIFT takes place at the intersection of these sectors – energy, mobility, battery storage, carbon finance – and can only be delivered through partnerships. In this sense, the Partnerships for the Global Goals is the perfect home for us,” continues Daniel Scheerooren, Sustainable Cities and Transport Specialist, at South Pole.

South Pole would like to thank all partners who played key roles in designing, funding and launching SHIFT Asia to accelerate the transformation of the transport and power sectors in South and Southeast Asia, including:

●      The Swiss Climate Cent Foundation

●      The Thailand Greenhouse Gas Organization (TGO)

●      Energy Efficiency Services Limited, India

●      Ambassador Helene Budliger Artieda and Vicky Janssens from the Swiss Embassy in Thailand

●      Mahua Acharya, Member of the Board at South Pole
