Publication of the CSI GNR 2014 data

This tenth (10th) GNR report consolidates information from 934 facilities around the world. These facilities produce approximately 21% of global cement production. 83% of the data is independently assured.

Geneva, 22 July 2016The 2014 results show the cement industry maintaining the improvements of recent years. Specific net emissions, net meaning discounting the use of alternative fuels, are 19% below 1990 levels. Including the saved emissions achieved by the use of biomass, participating companies have avoided 110 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions. This has been achieved by significant investment in more efficient kilns, higher fossil fuels substitution, increasing use of biomass and improving clinker mineralogy, so that the clinker content of cement can be reduced.

This year for the first time GNR commissioned an independent review of the reports by the European Cement Research Academy (ECRA). To improve the information value of the report, for example, charts now have more relevant information on coverage for recent years. Also, alternative fuels are now labelled either “biomass” or “alternative fossil and mixed fuels”.

Another development is the generation of national and regional cumulative frequency distributions (cfds) from facility data rather than from consolidated company level inputs. This allows many more "cfds" at national and regional level than in previous years while maintaining the strict confidentiality policies of GNR.
