Sustainable Urban Mobility (SiMPlify)

Today, decisions taken in cities across the world will shape our future lives. SiMPlify offers a way for cities and businesses to collaborate on these decisions as they relate to mobility, with the goal of creating livable and sustainable cities where people can prosper.

WBCSD has developed tools that enable more effective and inclusive decision-making, to improve the performance of mobility systems in cities. A set of sustainable urban mobility indicators and an online mobility tool help cities identify and address mobility challenges, with a specific focus on improving commuters’ quality of life, limiting environmental impact and reducing air pollution.

    The challenge

By 2030, around 60% of the global population will live in cities. By 2050 this will rise to 75%. Urban mobility currently accounts for 40% of all CO2 emissions of road transport and up to 70% of other pollutants from transport. Transport is one of the largest sources of GHG emissions globally and smog represents a serious public health concern. The question of how to enhance mobility while reducing congestion, accidents and pollution is a common challenge to all major cities in the world.

    The business case

Business has the expertise, the strategic interest and the financial capacity to provide low-carbon mobility solutions in cities. As the need for urban mobility is growing, the way we travel and transport goods must change. To do so, each city must find the right responses to these challenges, taking their specific circumstances into account. To create better, smarter, more sustainable cities, cities and businesses need to work together on tailor-made solutions.

    The solution

SiMPlify helps connect companies with city authorities and relevant stakeholders; proposing an objective model; promoting innovation in mobility systems and providing citizens with easy, safe and clean mobility. SiMPlify uses a fact-based mobility planning tool and a set of sustainable mobility indicators. It facilitates collaboration between business and cities to find ways to meet a city’s sustainability needs while helping create livable and sustainable cities.
