below50

below50 is a global campaign that brings together the entire value-chain for sustainable fuels – that is, fuels that produce at least 50% less CO2 emissions than conventional fossil fuels. Our goal is to create the demand and market for these fuels in order to scale up their deployment. Any company who produces, uses or invests in fuels with at least 50% lower emissions than conventional fossil fuels can apply to join.

The challenge

Transport accounts for 27% of total global energy use and contributes 20% of energy- and process-related CO2 emissions. The challenge of decarbonizing transport is massive: 90% of the sector is dependent on oil and demand for transport will increase by 75% by 2050.

The business case

Low-carbon transport fuels are essential to achieving environmental, social and economic goals. Only 3% of transportation fuels are currently low-carbon, and this figure must grow to 10% by 2030 in order to satisfy economic growth and help keep global temperatures from rising more than 2°C. This is a significant market opportunity that is predicted to double to $185 billion globally by 2020.

The solution

below50 is a global, unified voice of companies working across the sustainable fuels supply chain to decarbonize the transport sector. It aims to improve the perception of low-carbon fuels and create the conditions for successful development and commercialization. The collaboration promotes the world’s most sustainable fuels to producers, consumers, investors and policy-makers; and companies must meet strict sustainability and commerciality criteria to join the campaign. The work program includes:

  • Advocacy and communication
  • Overcoming financial barriers
  • Overcoming policy barriers
