Low-Carbon Freight

Low-Carbon Freight explores opportunities for emissions reductions beyond alternative fuels and engine efficiency improvements. Our Road Freight Lab (RFL) investigated how collaboration and optimization could maximize emissions reductions. Now, we’re validating these solutions in the real world. FreightShare Lab (FSL) is a 30-month collaborative research initiative to demonstrate how strategic data and asset sharing between road/rail carriers and shippers can reduce empty running and under-utilization of freight vehicles.

The Challenge

In 2015, freight transport was responsible for 30% of transport-related CO2 emissions from fuel combustion. As companies face increasing pressure to reduce emissions while supporting a growing global economy, freight transport systems must be transformed.

The Business Case

Research shows that deploying dynamic data and asset sharing platforms could unlock freight efficiency to enable route and load optimization across multiple freight vehicle fleets. Benefits for aggregators, shippers and cosigners include broader geographic coverage, faster delivery times, improved margins with increased utilization rates and the opportunity to reduce overheads and CO2 emissions by 20%.

The Business Solution

This project enables emissions reductions through greater asset efficiency and use rates, while keeping overall transport costs down. The four key solutions are:

  • Avoiding journeys where possible
  • Modal shift to lower-carbon transport systems
  • Lowering energy intensity
  • Reducing carbon intensity of fuels

Strategy

In 2017, Low Carbon Freight began building a coalition of companies, government and customers to carry out a demonstration project.

To identify ambitious long-term solutions to enable emissions reductions from freight, the FSL brings together in collaboration global manufacturers, logistics service providers, energy companies, and transport users.
