Overview

Its comprehensive work program enables the WBCSD to cover all aspects of sustainable development in business. To deal effectively with all issues it is divided into focus areas, sector projects, systems solutions and capacity building.

A unique feature of the WBCSD’s work is its sector projects. These are practical initiatives, rooted in independent research, to work out how critical industries can meet sustainability challenges.

Further, recognizing the overlap of challenges, and the need for tackling major sustainability issues with a more systems-based approach, the WBCSD has started a category of work called systems solutions.

Last but not least, the WBCSD promotes capacity building activities to support the integration of sustainable development into business practices. In particular, the Council is setting up a virtual Sustainable Development Management Institute to train corporate leaders on sustainability challenges.

Member engagement

The WBCSD is unique because its output is developed and road tested by its members. Its comprehensive work program enables it to cover all aspects of sustainable development in business. To deal effectively with all issues the work program is divided into focus areas, sector projects, systems solutions and capacity building.

Focus areas

The focus area structure helps ensure a swift and agile response to publicly debated issues and provides a platform to for the formulation of positions, messages and action.

Each focus area consists of a Focus Area Core Team (FACT), working groups and workstreams. FACTS are led by at least two CEO co-chairs. Working groups form the engine room where member company liaison delegates and other experts develop intellectual capital, provide content, engage in advocacy, and take messages back to the companies. Each focus area has work streams examining specific area-related issues.
