The WBCSD on Electricity Utilities

Electricity is at the heart of the global energy challenge. Its share of overall energy use is rising, as it brings crucial societal value to the economies of most countries. It clearly represents a driver of development and productivity, yet significant sustainability issues face the sector today:

  • With a current trend toward deregulation and intensified competition, and to fulfill its role as a catalyst for development, the sector is under pressure to attract sufficient investment to expand global supplies substantially.

  • At a time when energy security concerns are favoring coal generation, the sector faces the global challenge of mitigating its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, projected by some to double by 2030, while keeping other impacts and costs at acceptable levels.

  • With growing demand for renewable, decentralized energy production and energy efficiency the sector must address challenges of advanced infrastructure technology, such as smart grids.

  • The lack of access to electricity that far too many people in developing countries have to endure is one of the significant stumbling blocks on the way to making poverty history.

The WBCSD's Sector Project on Electricity Utilities brings together nine leading utilities from around the world to develop a deeper and more concrete understanding of these challenges and explore policy needs and the potential business contribution to solutions.
