Stemming the tide of water scarcity

Business growth and longevity can be ensured via successful stewardship of a fast-disappearing commodity

As increasing scarcity of water drives upwards the value of a commodity that forms an integral, often unnoticed, part of daily life, business is taking stock. Water is used in the manufacture and delivery of virtually all products and services so its value and availability impact every corner of business operations. By increasing awareness of the issues surrounding water, both in business and government, and producing tools and guidance on how business can best manage its water usage, the WBCSD aims to provide sustainable solutions that can allow business to grow and prosper.

Water is recognized as a critical sustainable development challenge alongside energy, biodiversity, food security and climate change.  Globally, per capita availability of freshwater is steadily decreasing and this trend will inevitably continue with population growth and augmenting consumption levels in developing countries. Already, some parts of the world are at a point of water stress where locally available fresh water resources are exceeded by local demand and we can anticipate increased competition and even conflict for ever scarcer fresh water resources.

As a consequence water availability, quality and security challenges are evident and visible on the full range of national and international political and regulatory agendas.

Water is a key priority for business as it is a necessary input in the manufacture, delivery and use of virtually all products and services. Almost all companies are affected by uncertainties, tensions and dilemmas associated with their water consumption and use. While a water-constrained world poses significant risk for businesses worldwide, business can also contribute by providing sustainable water solutions via the goods, services and technology they provide.

The WBCSD has been active on water issues for more than 12 years. During this time it has succeeded in elevating water issues up the business agenda by increasing awareness among opinion leaders and decision makers, the development of tools that have been customized to meet industry specific needs, and advocacy efforts at events like Stockholm World Water Week.

WBCSD member companies aspire to achieve responsible water management throughout their value chains and operate in an environment where all people and businesses have access to safe and reliable water supply and adequate sanitation.

In order to achieve this, the WBCSD is working with member companies to develop cost effective, credible and operational frameworks for water use assessment and stewardship. It focuses on building long-term insights for short term responses to the water, energy, food and climate nexus which will involve establishing ways in which to accelerate sustainable and equitable access to water and sanitation. This will lead to a step change in efficient water use to meet urban and rural demand challenges and also, demonstrate the business value of achieving water security
